Biography
In Kentucky in the late 90's, a young Nathan Gillum rehearsed for his first public "gig" in his parents basement. While taking a break from rehearsal that day, an even younger Andrew Gillum sat down behind a drum set for the first time. The events of that day would change their lives forever setting them both on lasting musical paths.
In 1999 Nathan briefly attended Marshall University for classical guitar. Upon leaving school early, he co-formed a new original band called the Genuine Junk Band. Andrew Gillum while still in high-school often "sat in" with the band but had to be accompanied by their mom because he was too young to get into nightclubs.
For the next 11 years Nathan pursued his career with the Genuine Junk Band taking the band on tour while Andrew attended Morehead State University performing in the prestigious marching band snare line and other ensembles. Often during that time the Gillum brothers would perform with the Genuine Junk Band together recording albums and playing road gigs.
In 2010 the brothers took separate paths. Nathan moved to Nashville, TN where he spent time writing music and performing. Andrew Gillum moved to Brooklyn,NY enrolling in City College and studying with world class jazz players. During this time of separation the Gillum brothers began collaborating on music via the internet by sending tracks back and forth. Out of these recordings grew a new idea for a project, a duo that could sound like four or five people, playing original fresh music.
The brothers formed GILLUMESH, a play on their last name and the Gillum's doing what they do best, meshing musically. Nathan plays a custom built hybrid bass/guitar instrument while Andrew plays poly-rhythmic drum and percussion textures. They both sing harmonies and write great original songs/compositions. If you close your eyes you'll swear an entire band is on stage but it's just two brothers playing their hearts out, laying down soulful, funky grooves.
